Does every child have the capacity to get significantly better at managing their emotions?

  • Is your child behaving aggressively?
  • Is your child pushing all your red buttons?
  • Are you feeling afraid and disempowered?
  • Are you getting sucked into spirals of escalation?

At ‘learn NVR’, we deliver proven techniques to stay calm and respond to your child’s provocations in ways that benefit you and your child.

Our secret? Non-Violent Resistance

We do this by using Non-Violent Resistance (NVR), founded by Professor Haim Omer. NVR is internationally recognised as a highly successful approach, designed to help parents and caregivers reduce challenging behaviours in children. NVR is rooted in the principles of non-violence, originally inspired by Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., and adapted by Haim Omer for parenting situations.

“If we are to teach real peace in this world, and if we are to carry on a real war against war, we shall have to begin with the children”

Mahatma Gandhi

Our parenting course will enable you to

  • Develop a loving relationship with your child
  • Regain your authority and effectively set limits
  • De-escalate situations and avoid power struggles
  • Create a supportive network around yourself and your child

Core principles of NVR

Non-Violence as a philosophy
NVR encourages parents to resist harmful behaviours in non-harmful ways.
De-escalation
NVR helps parents to interrupt the cycle of conflict and aggression.
Strengthening parental presence
NVR helps parents bolster their presence and demonstrate authority through calm, clear boundaries rather than fear or control.
Support network
NVR uses a supportive network, including extended family, friends, and community members to reinforce the child’s feeling that the caregivers are not alone, and that they (the child) also belong.
Reconciliation and repair
NVR seeks to maintain and repair the parent child relationship. Restoring trust and connection is essential in bringing about change.

Our Experts

Prof Haim Omer

Haim Omer is the founder of NVR. Some years before he developed the approach, he learned through his own experiences the power of parental presence. In his work with families in the 1990s he found that when he told parents about this presence and what it means, they became more present right there and then in the room. Listen to this trailer of Haim explaining this experience.

Dr Peter Jakob

With a background in social work, Dr Peter Jakob has worked as Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Family Therapist in both CAMHS and Adult Mental Health for over 40 years, specialising in children and families involved with child protection, trauma or other difficulties such as neurodivergence. Peter introduced Nonviolent Resistance therapy and practice (NVR) to the UK. Listen to this trailer of Peter speaking about the need that led him to bring NVR to the UK.

Dr Joanna North

Joanna North has been working with children in foster care and adoptive families for over 20 years. A decade ago, she opened a children’s home. She found that violence was turning many people away from the caring profession. She has since brought NVR into her practice to help adoptive and foster parents take on their parenting role and develop the relationship that the child needs whilst surviving the very challenging behaviour that often comes with it. Listen to this trailer of Joanna talking about how she uses NVR with the families she works with.
